What is Manual Metal Arc (MMA) Welding
Manual Metal Arc (MMA) welding, also known as Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) or simply stick welding, is one of the oldest and most reliable welding processes used worldwide. MMA welding works by striking an electric arc between a coated electrode (“the stick”) and the base metal, which melts both the electrode and the metal surface to form a strong joint. The electrode’s flux coating releases a shielding gas as it burns, protecting the weld pool from contamination.
This method is widely used in construction, heavy industry, shipbuilding, and repair work because it performs well in outdoor environments and on a variety of metals, including steel, cast iron, and structural alloys. At OnHydro Tech in Cambridge, our team specializes in MMA welding for projects that require strength, durability, and flexibility—even in less-than-ideal conditions. Whether it’s structural welding, pipeline repair, or fabrication, MMA welding offers a rugged and dependable solution.
